The group has been advocating for the San José since 2017, initially seeking to halt Colombia's exploration alliance with Maritime Archaeology Consultants (MAC), the Swiss treasure-hunting firm that helped locate the ship. The San José, which sank off Colombia's coast in 1708 during the War of the Spanish Succession, has become one of the world's most disputed shipwrecks, with numerous parties laying claim to its valuable cargo. The most notorious dispute involves the US-based salvage company Sea Search Armada, which claims to have located the galleon in the early 1980s and is seeking $10 billion, representing half the cargo's value. The conflict has even reached the Hague's Permanent Court of Arbitration. The San José was designated a protected archaeological area in 2024, placing it under the jurisdiction of the Colombian Institute of Anthropology and History (ICANH). However, while many celebrated this enhanced protection, the VNPCS director, Francisco Muñoz Atuesta, says previous problems were disregarded. The controversy has also sparked debate over the continued exploration of the ship, with experts questioning the lack of a long-term, science-based strategy. The San José research team, however, views the issue differently, arguing that the retrieved objects help determine the site's conservation and degradation through physicochemical studies. The fragment of rope found in the surfaced cannon has also sparked debate, with the VNPCS director describing it as 'most likely modern', while the team member, Ricardo Borrero, argues that it is historical.
